The classic tells: water that's rusty or metallic-tasting from the hot tap only, rumbling or popping sounds (sediment baking on the bottom), moisture or drips around the base, and hot water that runs out faster than it used to.
Age math: conventional tanks last 8–12 years. Past ten, any of the signs above means 'replace on your schedule,' because the alternative is a failed tank flooding the mechanical room on a long weekend.
It's also the natural moment to ask the tankless question — endless hot water, 15–20 year lifespan, and reclaimed floor space. We'll quote both options honestly; tankless isn't right for everyone.
