The comfortable, efficient baseline for most Ontario homes is 20–21°C when you're home and awake, and a 3–4 degree setback overnight or while you're out. Each degree of setback trims real money off the season.
Two myths to retire: cranking the thermostat higher doesn't heat the house faster (furnaces are on or off, not 'more on'), and setbacks don't 'cost more to recover than they save' in a typical forced-air home — they save.
One exception: heat pumps prefer smaller setbacks (1–2°C), because deep recoveries can trigger backup heat. A smart thermostat that knows your equipment handles this automatically.
